Title: On Saying Something New

Abstract: What does it mean to “say something new” in philosophy? This paper explores the value of novelty in a philosophical contribution. I articulate several ways in which novelty in philosophy is typically understood and pursued. I argue that there are good reasons to reject these standard ways of thinking about novelty. I develop several alternative conceptualizations and argue that novelty understood in service of these ends is more fruitfully and equitably pursued.
