Rational Relief

Henry Schiller and Casey O'Callaghan

Abstract:

It is natural to think of relief as a feeling or experience. In particular, relief might be thought to be associated with the ending of an episode of discomfort. We think instead that relief is a rational attitude. In particular, we propose and defend a conception in which relief is an attitude that is apt just in case an agent is sensitive in the right way to a desire's being satisfied.
